A lesbian, Alike quietly embraces her identity and is looking for her first lover, but she wonders how much she can truly confide in her family, especially with her parents' marriage already strained. When Alike's mother presses her to befriend a colleague's daughter (Aasha Davis), Alike finds the gal to be a pleasant companion.

When They See Us is based on events of the April 19, 1989, Central Park jogger case and explores the lives of the five suspects who were prosecuted on charges related to the sexual assault of a female victim, and of their families.

A tribute to the controversial black activist and leader of the struggle for black liberation. He hit bottom during his imprisonment in the '50s, he became a Black Muslim and then a leader in the Nation of Islam. His assassination in 1965 left a legacy of self-determination and racial pride.

CHARITIES AND ORGANISATIONS TO SUPPORT

 Sarbat LGBT Sikhs – a social and support group for LGBT Sikhs

They offer a platform for likeminded Sikhs from all walks of life and aim to promote the LGBT Sikh cause. Based in London, they organise events around the UK including Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Leicester, Bradford and New York.

S.P.I.C.E for BME LBTQ Women

S.P.I.C.E (Sisters Promoting Identity, Culture and Empowerment) is a social group for Lesbian, Bisexual and Trans women of colour.

​

Stand Against Racism and Inequality (SARI)

Stand Against Racism and Inequality (SARI) provides support for people who have suffered hate crime, including attacks that were racist, homophobic, transphobic and/or sexist.

The charity employs trained caseworkers in order to help victims with the mental trauma they are experiencing, to assist with legal proceedings and to refer them to other services that may be of use.

Exist Loudly Fund

London writer and activist Tanya Compass established the Exist Loudly Fund just this week to create ‘tangible change for Queer Black Young people in London’.

The money will be used to cover the costs of workshops, mentoring sessions and activities - and any extra funds raised will go towards Queer Black Christmas, an ‘annual celebration for Queer Black Young people who are experiencing homelessness or living in a hostile environment’.

Discrimination Law Association (DLA)

The Discrimination Law Association (DLA) works to improve equality law by bringing together a range of individuals, including discrimination law practitioners, policy experts and academics.

It carries out its mission by partaking in activities such as submitting responses to government consultations and participating in conferences and seminars.

 

Imkaan

This UK-based, black feminist organisation is dedicated to addressing violence against BAME women and girls.

The organisations works around issues such as domestic violence, forced marriage and ‘honour-based’ violence, both supporting survivors and raising awareness.

​

StopWatch UK

The StopWatch campaign has been fighting the racist and disproportionate use of stop and search since 2010.

A group made up of academics, lawyers, civil liberties activists, and community stakeholders, it aims to promote fair, effective and accountable policing for all.

​

The 100 Black Men of London

This community charity led by Black men focuses its resources on providing mentoring, education, economic empowerment and community events.
